Sounds & Colors: A memorial tribute to artist Kennedy Bahia

Art that remains, even when time falls silent.

In the Sounds & Colors series, the Sanma Hotel pays an in memoriam tribute to artist Kennedy Bahia, celebrating his career and legacy through the work “As Baianas,” displayed in the hotel space. More than an artistic element, the work invites contemplation of identity, ancestry, and Brazilian cultural diversity, reflecting the artist’s sensitive and profound взгляд on the Brazil that welcomed him.

Kennedy Bahia: career, identity, and legacy

Kennedy Bahia (1929–2005) was born in Valparaíso, Chile, under the name Patrick Maderos Kennedy Dito. Trained as a mining engineer, he had his first contact with the exuberance of Brazilian fauna and flora while working in the Amazon region, initially in Bolivia and later in Alto Tapajós, in Amazonas.

During a convalescence from malaria, he began his artistic journey as a tapestry maker, a decisive moment that would transform his life and place him among the great names of Brazilian art.

In the 1960s, he moved to Bahia, a place he adopted not only as his home but as his identity, adding the state’s name to his own surname in a symbolic gesture of belonging. From that encounter, his work began to engage intensely with folklore, fauna, flora, and Afro-Bahian culture, becoming a reference in Naïf Art in Brazil.

Tapestry, colors, and international recognition

Between the 1960s and 1970s, Kennedy Bahia was considered one of the greatest tapestry makers in Brazil, creating pieces marked by vibrant colors, tropical narratives, and symbolism linked to religions of African origin.

His collection “Fauna and Flora of Bahia” (1973) achieved international recognition and became part of private collections and highly prestigious spaces, such as the Palácio da Alvorada, in Brasília. A close friend of names such as Jorge Amado and Carybé, Kennedy Bahia played a decisive role in promoting Bahian culture in Brazil and abroad.

“As Baianas”: identity, ancestry, and diversity

The work “As Baianas” distills the essence of Kennedy Bahia’s legacy. Its figures express strength, ancestry, and belonging, celebrating Afro-Brazilian culture and the diversity that makes up the country’s identity.

At the Sanma Hotel, the work establishes a silent dialogue with the environment, becoming part of guests’ experience and inviting reflection on roots, cultural memory, and artistic expression.

Sounds & Colors: art that inspires

The Sounds & Colors series is an editorial space dedicated to artists and their works, promoting reflections on art, culture, and memory. By honoring Kennedy Bahia, the Sanma Hotel reaffirms its commitment to valuing cultural legacies and integrating art into the experience of those who pass through its spaces.
